ART MOSCOW WORKSHOP, begun in 2001, is the first art precedent in Russia. This project gives artists an opportunity to carry out their creative plans in the Central House of Artists for one week without censorship by curators who are more focused on market conditions. ART MOSCOW WORKSHOP is not a curator project. It allows everyone – curators, critics and spectators alike – to look at the artistic process through the prism of artists' ideas and concepts.
The project has been recognized by the art public as a "star factory" of the contemporary Russian artmarket. A qualified jury traditionally selects the winner of this prize. This contemporary art national award was called BLACK SQUARE in 2003.
Since 2004, BLACK SQUARE has been held separately from the Art Moscow Fair dates. This occasion gives artists some additional time and chance to prepare a special project for participation in this prize. The winner has the unique opportunity to provide the special exhibition at the following Art Moscow Fair.
